Suwa Seikosha began in 1942 as Daiwa Kogyo in Suwa, Nagano, Japan. A joint-venture watch manufacturing operation was formed with Hattori (now Seiko) and the companies were merged in 1959 to become Suwa Seikosha. This company operated separately from Daini Seikosha and focused on high-end watches, originating the Grand Seiko line in 1960. Suwa Seikosha and Epson Corporation merged in 1985 to become Seiko Epson, which operates the Orient watch company today and produces quartz watches for Seiko.
