VMF 3022

Seed VMF 3022 has two barrels but just 50 hours power reserve

Seed VMF 3022 is a compact double-barrel automatic movement created by Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. It is used by Parmigiani Fleurier as Cal. PF315, Hermès (which owns 25% of VMF), and Bulgari as Cal. BVL 193. It is highly customizable in decoration and is available with modules to add complications like moon phase and GMT or as a simple time and date movement.

VMF considers their movements to be “seeds” for other calibres from OEMs, and VMF 3022 is their 11.5 ligne offering. The base measures 11.5 ligne (25.60 mm) diameter and is 3.70 mm thick, a common size popularized by ETA in the 1970s. It has 28 jewels and the variable inertia balance operates at 4 Hz (28,800 A/h). It is a high-end movement with a central balance (usually tungsten) mounted on ceramic ball bearings. Winding is uni-directional and it features two spring barrels which power the movement in series but provide just 45-50 hours power reserve.

Distinctive features of Seed VMF 3022 movements include a balance mounted on a cock at 8:00 (with the stem at 9:00), two spring barrels visible at 11:00 and 2:00, and three screws holding the rotor with 7 ball bearings.

Vaucher Manufacture initially created Cal. VMF 4000 as a base for modular complications. This was revised for mass production as Cal. VMF 3000 (10.5 ligne) in 2011 and offered to partners for the first time. The new movement was later up-sized to 11.5 ligne to become the familiar Cal. VMF 3022 seen today.
