Nomos DUW 6101 Introduction
Cal. 6101 from Nomos is a thin automatic movement with peripheral date wheel. Introduced in 2018, the movement builds on the in-house Cal. DUW 3001 with a novel date complication that works both forwards and backwards. It also leverages the peripheral date technology originally seen on the Nomos Beta movement, though most Nomos watches using Cal. 6101 show the date using a colored mark that shows through a series of 31 apertures around the dial.
The in-house Nomos Swing System features a balance bridge, unusual for Nomos, with Etachron-style adjustment and Incabloc double cone shockproofing. The balance is located at 4:00 when viewed from the back side of the movement with the crown at 9:00. Although Nomos emphasizes the 3.6 mm height of the movement, this is not notably thin compared to other automatic date movements, especially given the large 35.2 mm (15.5 ligne) diameter.
Nomos DUW 6101 Operation
The movement can be manually wound with the crown in position 1. Rotate the crown clockwise to wind the mainspring.
The date wheel is advanced with the crown in second position (one notch out). Turn the crown clockwise to advance the date wheel by one day and counter-clockwise to go back one day.
The time is set with the crown in third position (pulled all the way out). Rotate the crown clockwise to advance the minute and hour hands and counter-clockwise to turn them backward.
Nomos neomatik Overview
“neomatik” is a family of slim high-beat movements from Nomos. Introduced in 2014 with the DUW 3001, the neomatik line is distinguished from the DUW 4000/5000 family thanks to its high 28,800 A/h beat rate, full balance bridge, and slimmer 3.6 mm profile. It also uses the in-house Swing System escapement.
The neomatik movements locate the balance wheel at 4:00, when viewed from the back with the winding stem at 9:00, just like the automatic Alpha family movements. They feature a balance bridge, however, and are completely different from the ETA-derived balance used previously.
In 2018, Nomos introduced the neomatik Date movement, Cal. DUW 6101. This features a novel mechanism to set the peripheral date wheel both forward and backward using the crown.
