Claro CL-888

Cal. CL-888 was produced by Claro Watch SA (Semag). It used a Chinese Sea-Gull ST1612 ebauche but was re-manufactured in Switzerland so it could be sold as Swiss Made. Production ended in 2009 once Claro began producing Cal. VB9832. A teardown suggested that it used a Swiss-made hairspring and was refinished with a lighter finish and an extra tension spring on the indirect seconds wheel.

According to the company, “CLARO Watch SA takes new parts and then completely re-works, cleans, measures, sets and tests each part before adding our 100% Swiss-made content. The full assembly is completed, tested and calibrated in our wholly owned factory in Bellinzona.” Claro also claimed that this movement was “re-engineer(ed) an existing calibre that was readily available from the market” and that it was a “long-established calibre from the Far East that was originally developed by a Swiss group.” However, since the ST1612 is based on the Miyota 8215, this is not accurate.
